Our farm is located in southern Vermont and covers 250 lightly wooded acres. We have cleared and fenced about 12 acres. Our approach to goat rearing is somewhat different to that of most farmers, since from Spring through Fall we allow our goats to freely roam the unfenced land, returning in the evening to the safety of their enclosures.
This method provides us with two main benefits, the first most obviously is that our feed bills during the free ranging time are minimal, and secondly parasite infestation is reduced since they are not confined to a small area that promotes parasite buildup. As goats are natural browsers the land is cleared of underbrush and fertilized, and they obtain optimal nutritonal benefits. None of this would be possible without the help of our "Maremma" guard dog Butch. Thanks to Butch we have never lost a single animal to predators, and this is in spite of a big local coyote population. We are so pleased with Butch that we have bought him Bella, and hope to be able to offer some of their puppies for sale in the near future. Please Contact Us for more information about Butch or any of our farming techniques. |
